FixCanvas Terms of Service
Effective date: October 9, 2026
Last updated: October 9, 2026
These Terms of Service ("Terms") are an agreement between you and Shifted, LLC ("FixCanvas", "we", "us") about your use of the FixCanvas Chrome extension, the FixCanvas server and website, the Ask AI assistant, and any paid plans (together, "the Service").
By installing or using the Service, you agree to these Terms and to the Privacy Policy. If you don't agree, don't use the Service.
1. Who can use FixCanvas
You must be at least 13 years old. If you are under 18 (or the age of majority where you live), you may use the Service only with the permission of a parent or guardian, who agrees to these Terms for you, and you need their permission to make any purchase.
2. What FixCanvas is
FixCanvas replaces the Canvas LMS dashboard and course pages with its own view, lets you work with your courses in that view, and offers an AI assistant that answers questions about your courses.
FixCanvas is independent. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Instructure, Inc. or your school. "Canvas" and "Instructure" are trademarks of Instructure, Inc., used only to describe what FixCanvas works with.
Your Canvas account is yours. FixCanvas uses the Canvas session you are already logged in with and can only see what your account can see. You remain responsible for following your school's rules and Canvas's terms of use. If your school doesn't allow browser extensions or AI tools, don't use FixCanvas there.
Actions you take go to Canvas. When you submit an assignment, post a reply, comment or mark an item done in FixCanvas, it is sent to Canvas as if you had done it in Canvas. Check that your submission went through, especially before a deadline; Canvas is the official record, not FixCanvas. Some items (for example, external-tool assignments and all quizzes) always open in Canvas instead.
3. Quizzes, exams and academic integrity
FixCanvas is built to stay out of quizzes and exams: it doesn't run on quiz pages, doesn't read quiz content, and the AI refuses to help with quiz, test or exam questions. You agree not to try to get around these protections, and not to use the Service in any way that breaks your school's academic integrity policy or your instructor's rules, including:
- getting help with a quiz, test or exam while it is open
- submitting AI-written work as your own where that isn't allowed
- sharing answers or course materials you aren't allowed to share
Proctoring and lockdown tools may detect or disable browser extensions, including FixCanvas. You are responsible for meeting the requirements of any proctored exam.
4. The AI assistant
- Answers can be wrong. AI answers are generated automatically from your course data and can be incomplete, out of date or incorrect, even when they cite a source. Always check due dates, grades, policies and instructions on the linked Canvas page, and ask your instructor when it matters. Don't rely on the AI for decisions with serious consequences.
- Not advice. Answers are not academic, legal, medical, financial or professional advice.
- What you send. You are responsible for your questions. Don't include sensitive personal information or other people's private information. Your questions and the course data shown under "What gets sent" are processed by OpenAI to generate answers, as described in the Privacy Policy.
- Acceptable use. Don't use the AI to create anything illegal, harmful, harassing or infringing, or in any way that breaks OpenAI's usage policies.
- Limits. Questions are subject to plan limits, rate limits, fair-use ceilings and a shared daily budget for free questions. When a limit is reached, Ask tells you when it refills.
5. Your content
"Your content" means your questions and the course data you choose to send. You keep whatever rights you have in it. You give us permission to process it only as needed to provide the Service (for example, sending it to OpenAI to get an answer). We claim no ownership of AI answers; as between you and us, you may use them, subject to these Terms and your school's rules. Course materials belong to your instructors, your school or other owners, and FixCanvas gives you no extra rights to them.
6. Plans
FixCanvas itself is free. AI questions are offered as follows (current details are always shown on the Plan page, which controls if it differs from this summary):
- Free trial: unlimited questions for 14 days, starting with your first question, subject to a fair-use ceiling.
- Free: after the trial, a set number of free questions every 30 days.
- Invite credits: extra questions for you and friends who use your invite code (section 8).
- Pro: a monthly subscription with unlimited questions, subject to fair use (section 7).
- Question packs: a one-time purchase of a set number of questions that don't expire while the Service is offered.
We may change free allowances, trial length, limits and which plans are available. Changes to the price of an existing subscription are covered in section 9.
7. Fair use
"Unlimited" means unlimited for normal personal use by one student. Pro and the free trial have hidden ceilings (currently 1,000 and 200 questions per 30-day period) and per-minute and per-day limits to prevent automated or abusive use. Free and trial questions may pause for everyone for the rest of the day if the shared daily budget runs out. Pro and pack questions don't count against that budget.
8. Invites, credits and restore codes
- Your invite code gives a friend extra questions when they enter it within 14 days of installing. You earn credits when that friend's first question is answered, for up to 20 friends.
- Don't create fake installs, use scripts, or otherwise game invites, trials or device linking. We may remove credits or plans obtained this way.
- Credits, trial questions and pack questions have no cash value, can't be sold or exchanged for money, and aren't refundable except as required by law.
- Restore codes move a purchase (Pro and extra questions) from one install to another. Keep yours private: anyone with your code can move your purchase to their install. We aren't responsible for purchases moved by someone who had your code.
9. Payments, renewal, cancellation and refunds
Payments are processed by Stripe under Stripe's terms. Prices are shown in US dollars and may not include taxes, which are added where required.
Pro is an auto-renewing subscription. By subscribing, you authorize us (through Stripe) to charge your payment method $2.99 every month, plus any applicable tax, until you cancel. Each period renews automatically on the same day of the month.
- Cancel any time in Stripe's billing portal ("Manage subscription" on the Plan page). Cancelling stops future charges; Pro stays on until the end of the period you've paid for, and you then go back to the free plan. Partial months aren't refunded.
- Summer pause (optional, off by default): if you turn it on, billing is paused from May 15 to August 20 (UTC) each year. Pro runs until the end of the period already paid for, then you're on the free plan for the summer. On August 20, billing restarts automatically, you're charged that day, and Pro comes back. If you turn it on or off during the summer, it takes effect right away.
- Price changes: we'll tell you at least 30 days before a new price applies to your subscription, and you can cancel before it does.
- Failed payments: if a payment fails, Stripe may retry it and Pro may end until payment succeeds.
Question packs are one-time purchases. Pack questions are added to your install right after payment and don't expire while the Service is offered.
Refunds. All purchases are final and non-refundable, including partial subscription periods and unused pack questions, except where the law requires otherwise. Nothing in these Terms limits refund or cancellation rights you have under the law where you live.
10. Rules for using the Service
You agree not to:
- reverse engineer, decompile or tamper with the extension or Server, except where the law allows it
- access the Server other than through the extension, or use scripts or bots to send questions
- share, resell or sublicense your install, token or plan (except moving your own purchase with a restore code)
- try to bypass limits, payments, quiz protections or security measures
- interfere with or overload the Service
- use the Service to break the law, your school's policies or anyone else's rights
11. Our rights in FixCanvas
FixCanvas, its code, design, name and logo belong to us or our licensors. We give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to install and use the extension for your own studies, in line with these Terms. Third-party components (such as pdf.js) are licensed under their own terms.
12. Third-party services
The Service depends on Canvas, Chrome, OpenAI, Stripe and Cloudflare. We don't control them and aren't responsible for their availability, changes or actions. If Canvas changes in a way that breaks FixCanvas, some features may stop working until we update it.
13. Changes, updates and ending the Service
- We may update the extension, and some updates may be required to keep using the AI.
- We may change these Terms. We'll update the "Last updated" date and, for significant changes, tell you in the extension. If you keep using the Service after changes take effect, you accept them. If you don't, stop using the Service and cancel any subscription.
- You can stop using FixCanvas at any time by uninstalling it (and cancelling any subscription).
- We may suspend or end your access if you break these Terms or misuse the Service. We may also stop offering the Service or any feature. If we plan to discontinue paid features, we'll give at least 30 days' notice in the extension and stop renewing subscriptions.
14. Disclaimers
THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE." TO THE FULLEST EXTENT ALLOWED BY LAW, WE DISCLAIM ALL WARRANTIES, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. WE DON'T PROMISE THAT THE SERVICE WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED, ERROR-FREE OR SECURE, THAT AI ANSWERS OR DISPLAYED COURSE INFORMATION WILL BE ACCURATE OR COMPLETE, OR THAT SUBMISSIONS AND POSTS MADE THROUGH FIXCANVAS WILL REACH CANVAS. SOME PLACES DON'T ALLOW THESE DISCLAIMERS, SO THEY MAY NOT ALL APPLY TO YOU.
15. Limitation of liability
TO THE FULLEST EXTENT ALLOWED BY LAW, WE WON'T BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR FOR LOST GRADES, MISSED DEADLINES, ACADEMIC PENALTIES, LOST DATA OR LOST PROFITS, ARISING FROM YOUR USE OF THE SERVICE. OUR TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ANY CLAIM RELATING TO THE SERVICE IS LIMITED TO THE GREATER OF THE AMOUNT YOU PAID US IN THE 12 MONTHS BEFORE THE CLAIM OR US$20. SOME PLACES DON'T ALLOW THESE LIMITS, SO THEY MAY NOT ALL APPLY TO YOU.
16. Indemnity
To the extent allowed by law, you agree to cover our reasonable losses and costs from claims by others caused by your breach of these Terms or your misuse of the Service.
17. Disputes and governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Rhode Island, USA, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. Before filing any claim, please contact us so we can try to resolve it informally within 30 days. Any dispute that isn't resolved will be decided in the state or federal courts located in Providence County, Rhode Island, and you and we consent to those courts, except that either of us may bring a claim in small-claims court. If you live in the EU, the UK or another place whose law gives you the right to bring claims in your local courts or under your local consumer law, nothing here takes that right away.
18. General
These Terms and the Privacy Policy are the whole agreement between you and us about the Service. If any part is found unenforceable, the rest still applies. If we don't enforce a part right away, we haven't waived it. You may not transfer these Terms; we may transfer them as part of a merger, acquisition or sale of assets.
